About

Event Address: 101 Auburn Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA, USA

Description:

In celebration of Women’s History Month, and throughout the month of March, the Auburn Avenue Research Library (AARL) will screen a variety of films and documentaries, exploring Black Womanhood. The screening will be followed by a discussion portion, featuring guest panelist Director of Athletics at Agnes Scott College, Dr. Markesha Henderson.

The AARL is highlighting Black Womanhood, with a screening of American Masters: Althea. This documentary celebrates the life and legacy of Althea Gibson (1927-2003), a truant from the rough streets of Harlem, who emerged as the unlikely queen of the highly segregated tennis world in the 1950s. Gibson was the first African American to play and win at Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals (precursor of the U.S. Open) — a decade before Arthur Ashe. Come into the library... an experience awaits you!
