MN MOTION: A Dance & Culture Exchange Experience

MN MOTION is an immersive day of African movement - bringing together four distinct classes, artists, communities and movement languages in one space.

Move through Traditional West African x Street Styles with Dancing Sistass; enter the rhythm, footwork and expression of Ghana through Tenolly–Cheetahlegs’ Afropop, blending Azonto, Afrohouse and Asorkpor; tap into the electric energy of Afrobeats with Minnesota favorite VUYD, whose “Vibe Until You Drop” approach is built on joy, connection and high-energy movement; and experience Ndombolo with NYC-based choreographer and cultural educator Ornellah, whose work is dedicated to teaching and preserving African dance through movement, history and community. 

Then the classroom becomes the arena.

ROOTS IN MOTION closes the experience with what we are presenting as Minnesota’s first African-styles-only 1v1 dance battle—a space to bring what you learned that day, what you already carry, and what you know from the wider African dance world onto the floor. Come for the cypher, enter the battle, represent your movement language and compete to be crowned an AFROCULTURE CHAMPION.

The winner receives a dedicated prize package and featured on the big stage at AfroFest Minnesota the following weekend.
