About
Event Address: 101 Auburn Avenue Northeast, Atlanta, GA, USA
Description: The Auburn Avenue Research Library, in collaboration with Workers World Party, commemorates the Haymarket Square Massacre and the establishment of International Workers Day, with screenings of the documentary short films Haymarket Martyrs and the Origin of May Day (35 min.) and Lucy Parsons and the Haymarket Affair (15 min.). These documentaries detail the surge of workers organizing and striking for the 8 hour work day and other improvements in their working conditions. In particular, this event will explore the extraordinary life of American labor organizer Lucy Gonzales Parsons, once described by the Chicago Police Department as "more dangerous than a thousand rioters" in the 1920s. In 1905 Parson's participated in the founding of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). This event will include post-screening discussions facilitated by contemporary labor activists focused on current workers' struggles.
